Character NAME: Moby Kingsley
Character PULL-POINT: Before attempting to steal the princess' crown
Character AGE: 26
Character ABILITIES:
Moby is a capable fighter. When he was younger he was taught how to fence using light rapiers and other swords, but he excels primarily at using smaller knives. He's a great shot and prefers picking off his target from further away, using throwing knives. Moby doesn't have any magical capabilities despite being from a bloodline that prides itself on having some of the last magic in the realm. This hinders him back home since it means that he can't rise to a position of power within the government, but there won't be any such issues here. Aside from throwing knives and swordfighting, Moby is a skilled thief who has learned how to tread quietly and quickly, striking at night and almost always getting away with whatever theft he had planned out. He's a kleptomaniac and doesn't usually plan his heists, but his skills have kept him out of trouble. He's also a capable leader despite his laid-back attitude and rarely takes a back seat to anyone when he knows what's going on. In this world he might need to stay back and watch for awhile, but that won't stop him from trying to take te lead whenever the opportunity presents itself! Finally, Moby is a capable sailor as well as a thief, and while he's not as interested in piracy as his friend Victor, Moby can maintain a very small boat on his own. He doesn't get seasick and has quite a good bit of knowledge about pirates and the ocean, though he prefers to do his thieving on land.

Character WORLD:
Moby comes from "the realm," a medieval-fantasy setting ruled by Princess Aria, who will become queen once she's married. The realm is bordered by ocean to the west and countries to the east, north, and south. These countries are collectively known as "the dark realm". The people of the realm don't know anything about the dark realm, but they know that venturing outside the realm is a death sentence. Moby has no idea what lies beyond the borders of the realm and has no intention of finding out.

Centuries ago, when the earth was created by the seven gods (each representing an element of magic within the world: light, dark, water, air, earth, wood, and fire), magic was as natural as breathing. Over time, the magic began to fade from the realm, leaving only those the gods had chosen to wield it. The gods chose seven oracles to represent them within the realm, and those oracles were given full knowledge of the god's elemental magic. These oracles were human though, and once one dies another is born to take his or her place.

Magic isn't completely gone from the world though. There are bloodlines that existed back in the day and still have magical capabilities. Among these families are the Archers and the Kingsleys. The exact number of families with magical capabilities is unknown, but Princess Aria has started trying to catalogue which members of the families have magic and which don't.

Being born without magic into a family capable of magic is enough to get one outcast for life. The families each have their own practices for testing children to see if they're capable of magic. The Kingsley family starts teaching magic at around age ten, but some families start earlier or later. Moby's mother died when he was six and his father and siblings were very distant from him. It's unknown if this played into Moby's inability to use magic, but either way, Moby was tested and proven to be incapable of using any sort of magic. The families do not all share one element, instead the element is determined by which sign the child is born under. Since Moby was born under the sign of air, he should have been capable of using wind magic. Unfortunately, he wasn't.

Magic isn't the only aspect of the realm though. The realm is a large country with numerous cities, but none are as grand as the capital city, Taranya. This is where the Princess resides, and it also happens to be home to three of the magical families: the Archers, the Kingsleys, and the Baxters. Taranya is a port city, situated near the ocean, but toward the midle of the country in terms of latitude. It's a tropical paradise where there's never any snow or winter, but outside the city are the Kahori Deserts which span for miles to the east. The rest of the realm is similar to Taranya; there is never any winter due to the realm being situated in the south of the continent, but the heat can get excruciating during the summer. Autumn and spring barely exist and are characterized by (slightly) cooler temperatures. All four seasons are recorded because at one time, the realm did have winter, but that was hundreds of years ago, back when the goddess of darkness ruled the realm.

The gods do not fight for dominance anymore. They're much older now and are more focused on expanding their reach through the dark realm instead of fighting over what land they share. It is said that the goddess of darkness rules over the dark realm, but no one knows for sure. That would involve going out to the dark realm to check, and no one wants to do that.

Taranya and the other major cities are looked after by guards, trained by the elite guards that protect the princess. These guards cannot protect all of the realm, however, and a safe haven for criminals exists in the delta. The delta is an area further north of Taranya, characterized by its placement between three of the major rivers of the realm. The delta is really a small city nestled between all three rivers and the ocean, making it an ideal place for thieves and pirates alike. The guards haven't been able to enter the delta in recent memory, but they haven't exactly been trying very hard either. As long as the criminals are in one place stealing from and killing each other, then those in Taranya are safe, right? It's flawed logic like this that allows Moby to move about with freedom between the capital city and other major cities in the realm.

The technology in the realm is equivalent to that of medieval Europe; there's no phones or electricity and everything is run by swords and sorcery. The gods are central figures within everyday life, but magic isn't. There are some people (especially those who don't live in the larger cities) who don't even believe that magic exists anymore. Moby obviously isn't one of those people since he's seen magic first-hand.

Character HISTORY:
Moby was born into the Kingsley family, a family that prides itself on being directly descended from the first humans created by the gods. Because of this rich bloodline, Moby's family is capable of magic. The Kingsley family is very rich and Moby was enrolled in a private school as soon as he was elligible. His parents were distant and his older siblings were much too old for him to play with, so Moby relied on making friends with his charming personality. He got along well with most of the kids and despite not caring much about his studies, managed to get decent grades.

Moby's mother died when he was six. It was his first brush with death and it terrified him. He hadn't been very close to his mother due to living at the boarding school and his mother's constant work, but it scared him nonetheless. Moby learned very quickly that everyone has a set amount of time in this world, and his outlook on life started forming from that day. Perhaps he was considered cold or careless since he didn't mourn his mother's passing "properly", but Moby did miss her.

At age ten Moby started training to use magic. This process involved learning the basics from books scattered around the library in the Kingsley family home and watching demonstrations by his father and siblings. Moby studied hard to please his father, but after a year of hard work he was still incapable of casting even the easiest of spells. His father didn't give up and neither did Moby, though his siblings insisted that he didn't have the capability for magic. Moby would eventually realize they were right, but that would be after three years of intense magical training.

Moby's life at school was very normal. He passed his classes, made friends, and ultimately didn't act out much. He was a class clown and occasionally got in trouble for it, but for the most part there was nothing extraordinary about his childhood. The only thing that really stuck out was the fact that Moby couldn't keep his hands off other peoples' possessions. His thievery started after his mother's death at around age seven and continued all throughout his schooling. At age fifteen, after failing his magical training and having his father give up on him, Moby finished his schooling. His father wanted him to go into training to be a guard, like his elder brother Richard, but Moby had no interest in that. He couldn't work at the temple like his sister Celia because he didn't have any magic powers. The one thing Moby had learned that he actually liked during his time at school was stealing. He didn't like any of the subjects he had been taught and after deciding that he wanted to become a thief, he snuck away from home to hitch a ride to the delta.

His father and siblings were understandably worried when Moby went missing and while Moby did manage to make it onto a ship, all ships leaving the harbor were checked to ensure that Moby couldn't escape Taranya. Once he was found he was dragged home kicking and screaming (literally) and forced into training to become a guard. For two years he would endure the training at his father's request. Then his father died. Moby hadn't been much closer to his father than he was to his mother, but he took this death harder than he had his mother's. Moby's training slipped and he distanced himself from everyone, trying his hardest to figure out what the point of life was when death could rob someone of it so easily. He mourned his father's passing, but more than that he mourned his own innocence - he could no longer turn his face away from death and had to accept that one day he too would die.

In short, Moby spent quite some time being an angsty teenager and being a pain in the ass.

Richard became head of the family which meant that Moby saw even less of him. Celia was almost always at the temple which meant that Moby finally had a chance to sneak away from his family under the cover of darkness. He could finally fulfill his dream of stealing for a living, but he still left home with quite a bit of money to help him get started. This time he was able to pay his way on a ship and get out of town, headed toward the delta. He didn't know what he'd find there, but he was certain it would be better than trying to train to be a guard.

The delta was not a very welcoming place for a boy who had been raised in a very cushy lifestyle. The shock of it was nearly enough to make Moby turn around and head home, but this was his dream. He wanted to steal things and this would be his safe haven. It didn't take him long to figure out that everyone here operated under a code: money says more than words do. The money he had bought him a nice little house near the harbor and Moby spent time searching for other thieves who would be willing to teach him the tricks of their trade. Most of them laughed at him, saying a posh young lad like him would never make it anywhere in the underbelly of the realm. Moby persevered though and eventually stopped using his last name. He didn't need people to know that he was from a rich family like the Kingsleys; they might assume that he could use magic or that it would be beneficial to take him hostage and blackmail his family.

This was around the time he met Lae, his future partner-in-crime. Like him, Lae was a bit of an oddball in the delta, but for a different reason entirely: she could use magic despite being from a low-born family. She had been sent to the temple of earth to train her powers, but she had run away because she had no desire to be a temple-keeper. Lae and Moby hit it off right away and became good friends. The two of them eventually managed to get an apprenticeship under an older thief who was impressed by Lae's magic. She insisted that she wouldn't train with him unless Moby was allowed to come too, and the thief agreed. Darius became their new master and the two of them worked very hard to impress him and learn everything they could from him.

Life was remarkably good during this three year period. Moby picked up the skills he needed and learned quickly; he ended up being a better thief than Lae, but her magic always backed him up. They both learned how to fight with knives (as opposed to swords which Moby had already been trained to use), they learned how to throw knives, and they learned how to slip in and out of places undetected. Darius was impressed with the two of them and was prepared to retire when he proposed one final mission. They were to raid one of the rich families in the city of Plagis, the Ehlm family. Everything was planned out by Darius and if everything went according to plan, it would be a simple job. They would sneak in, take whatever things of value they could find, and get out. Darius' clan consisted of eight people, so it shouldn't have been a difficult mission.

Everything went wrong. One of the newer clan members had leaked information to the Ehlm family and they were ambushed by guards. Several of the clan members were outright killed, including Darius. Others were taken captive. Lae managed to escape, but Moby ended up caught in a battle with the heir to the Ehlm family, Marquis. Marquis wasn't just a skilled swordsman, he could also use fire magic. They fought viciously for quite some time before Marquis revealed that he knew exactly who Moby was.

Marquis had been in the class under Moby, he was only a year younger than Moby was. He recognized the Kingsley family name, and he recognized Moby. He knew Moby was incapable of magic - rumors did have a nasty way of spreading, after all - and he said he'd be pleased to return Moby to his family for a handsome reward. He first managed to catch Moby off-guard and scored a hit on Moby's cheek, leaving a very large wound that would eventually scar over into the massive scar on his right cheek. The guards surrounded him after that and Moby blacked out.

He woke up in chains in a dingy cell and was led to a courtroom where he would be tried for attempting to steal from the Ehlm family. They were in Taranya and sitting near the front were Moby's brother and sister. They were asked if they recognized Moby and to his horror, they both said they didn't. Moby was found guilty of attempting to steal from the Ehlms and attempting to take the life of the heir, Marquis. He was thrown back in the jail cell and in a week he would be sentenced, possibly to death.

Of course, Lae certainly wouldn't stand by and let that happen to Moby. She rounded up the last of Darius' clan and several new members and prepared a ship back to the delta. She managed to help Moby escape and they sailed back to safety where Moby's wound could be treated properly. Thankfully it wasn't infected, but it did take quite a long time for it to properly scab over (and even then Moby picked at the scab because he can never keep his hands still). The owner of the boat, Victor, was impressed by the two of them and offered to help them. Victor was a pirate by night and a businessman by day, one who would become an invaluable ally for them in the future.

Wanted posters of Moby started going up depicting him with a scar. The posters weren't exactly accurate, but they were close enough that Moby couldn't leave the delta at all without being spotted and identified. He wasn't identified as a Kingsley, merely as the man who tried to murder the heir to the Ehlm family. He didn't understand why his siblings had disowned him in public like that, but he assumed it had something to do with his choice in career. Regardless, he stuck by Lae's side and the two of them formed a clan of thieves that worked together, much like the clan Darius had led.

Years passed like this and eventually Moby was able to move about more freely. He had heard rumors of the power of the queen's crown and set his sights on that. Along with his clan members, Moby moved to Taranya and spent some time stealing from the people there, preparing to take the crown itself. The crown is supposed to allow a person to harness all the elements and use them all as long as its being worn. Moby wants that power for himself and he is going to get it. Or at least, he would, but that's his current canon point, so he won't be doing that any time soon.

Character PERSONALITY:
The first thing people notice about Moby is how laid-back he is. One would think that a thief who has been on the run for quite some time would be hard-pressed to keep his identity a secret and worry constantly about being captured. That's not how Moby handles it. Instead, he's incredibly calm about everything, never once getting worked up or upset about things. Even when things don't go his way and he ends up thrown in jail, for example, he's still cool and collected and making snide remarks about everything. Moby can't keep his mouth shut. He always has to have the last word or make some witty comment even when the situation really doesn't call for it. Despite that, he's not mean; his remarks are true but they're usually laden with sarcasm that makes it seem like he's only teasing. It's hard to tell if that's what he's doing or if he's actually trying to be mean. It really depends on the person.

Aside from being laid-back and witty, Moby's confident. In fact, he's more than that, he's over-confident. He knows that he's a great thief and good with weapons, so he'll show off given the opportunity. He lives to flaunt his skills, especially when it comes to stealing. He's a pretty well-known thief, but he'd like to increase his renown and infamy all throughout the realm instead of just in some of the larger cities. Moby's confidence often gets him in trouble; he thinks he can take on more guards then he can or he thinks he can escape without being noticed when he really can't, and thus gets him into trouble. Lae usually has to save him, but without her around, he's going to get himself in a lot more trouble than he's used to. This goes along with his laid-back personality; Moby isn't used to things not going his way.

One of the things Moby loves almost as much as stealing is flirting. He loves to make people feel good about themselves, but he also loves flustering the uptight people who don't like being flirted with. He's especially fond of the latter. He also gets pleasure from stinging pain such as minor cuts; he's a masochist who used to cut his wrists for pleasure. Moby is very playful and friendly with nearly everyone he meets, rarely getting off to a bad start with someone. He's even good with kids, playing games with them and indulging in their pasttimes. In fact, Moby seems to be a kid at heart, but there's more to him than meets the eye.

Moby's view on life is very simple: It's short, so live it up while you can. This mindset showed up after his father's death, where Moby learned that life is a very fragile thing. Ironically, Moby isn't bothered by taking lives, but this is due in part to how much of a hypocrite he really is. Moby often says one thing and does another, never practicing what he preaches. He'll tell others that stealing and killing are morally wrong, then will turn around and do both just to get some petty object he might decide he likes. He's very difficult to pin down in that regard because it's very difficult to tell just what he'll say or do next. Not even those who know him very well know what he's going to do next. He loves being unpredictable, almost as much as he loves stealing.

Appearances are the most important thing to Moby. He needs everything to look just so or he'll get upset (which really means "minorly peeved" since he never really gets angry about anything). His own appearance is a big issue for Moby. He has scars on his wrists and one much larger one on his cheek; he hides the ones on his wrists under gloves, but the one on his cheek can't be hidden. He shows it off like it's a battle scar instead, saying that he got it in a fight with a notorious brigand (or he got it in a fight with one of the princess' guards, or something even more outrageous); this is an over-the-top reaction to how he really feels about his scar. He's disgusted by it and hates looking at it, though he refuses to let anyone know that. He sees that as a weakness and he certainly can't have any weaknesses, now can he? So Moby acts like his scar is the best thing since sliced bread, all while secretly loathing it and hating the way his appearance has been marred by it.

This vast difference between what Moby says and thinks doesn't just apply to his scar. Moby acts completely carefree, but in reality he's incredibly cunning and takes in every detail of his surrounding. He wouldn't be a very good thief if he didn't care at all about his surroundings or the people he's dealing with. Instead, he listens very closely and watches carefully, even when it doesn't seem like he's paying attention. He's a lot more clever than he lets on, and he's content to have people think he's an idiot. Due to his years of schooling, he's actually quite intelligent and knows more than the average person in his world thanks to the private school he was essentially raised in. He's very thankful for that, if nothing else.

This isn't to say that Moby is one of the smartest people in the realm, however. Moby is still incredibly stupid in more ways than one, usually in regards to underestimating others. His street-smarts are still lacking in certain areas and he can be blissfully naive about very important things, such as how the world works and what will get him ahead in life. He's perfectly content to be a lowly thief forever, never once considering that this lifestyle may not be able to pay the bills and keep a roof over his head. He's been very lucky thus far and has been working with Lae by his side for years, but in a new world he won't have those luxuries. He'll have to learn how to properly take care of himself, something he doesn't really know how to do.

If it wasn't obvious by now, Moby is a kleptomaniac. He has the compulsion to steal things and gets a lot of enjoyment from it. The compulsion to steal things started after his mother's death, around the time he turned seven. This compulsion hasn't faded any since then and he genuinely loves what he does. Moby's thefts are often petty, but he has set his eyes on an incredibly lofty goal: the princess' crown which is said to grant the wearer the powers of all seven elements.

That brings up another good point: magic. Moby says he has no interest in magic whatsoever and to those who know him incredibly well, he says he doesn't care that he can't use it even though his siblings can. This is a lie. As usual, Moby is hiding his true feelings behind a facade of carelessness. He genuinely wants to be able to use magic and prove himself not just to his siblings, but to the world. Since he can't find a way to learn magic, he's resorted to stealing the princess' crown. Harnessing all seven elements will make him nearly invincible if he uses them right, and it will grant him ultimate power. With such power, he would gladly take over the throne and finally prove that he's capable of the great things that his father said he wasn't.

Obviously Moby has some Issues to work out. Aside from these issues, he has a great fear of heights and refuses to go anywhere where he'll be up high. Even the second story of his house is too high for his liking and he sleeps on the ground floor. Moby's also afraid of death, though he tries to claim he isn't. He's the sort of person to freeze up when his fears are realized and he can't properly respond until he's either back on solid ground or out of danger. Freezing up like this obviously isn't the best response and has nearly gotten him killed in the past. He's scared that one day this will get him killed.

Finally, Moby values his freedom above everything else. He loves stealing, yes, but he would give that up entirely (or well, try to since it is a compulsion) in order to remain free. His time in prison was mostly spent pacing around and counting all the stones in his cell, trying to come up with something to do to pass the time. He can't stand small spaces either and prefers to be outdoors. He's a nature-lover at heart and genuinely does care about the environment. Speaking of things he cares about, Moby cares deeply for his clan of thieves; they're essentially his family now that his brother and sister have thrown him out. He gets attached to people very easily which could come back to bite him in the future.

There's definitely more to Moby than meets the eye, but in the end he's still a laid-back, relaxed kind of guy who genuinely enjoys what life has to offer. He's got more layers than he lets on, but he's not intentionally hiding his true self from people to hurt them. He cares deeply for those around him and would do anything to protect them (except put himself in danger, that is). He's shallow, sly, and self-centered, but he's a good guy at heart. When he's not stealing from everyone, that is.

First PERSON:
[The video opens up to a close-up on Moby's face. His eyebrows are knit in concentration and his tongue is poking out of the side of his mouth as he fiddles with the device. The image turns upside-down for a moment before Moby corrects it and finally moves back, looking satisfied.]

There. I think it's working. It should be working. If it's not, I'm gonna look really stupid talking to myself.

[He laughs, rubbing the back of his head and grinning.]

Okay, first of all, hi everyone! My name's Moby. I'd say it's good to meet you all, but I haven't met you each in person yet, so how could I know that? Anyway, I've got a quick question for you all!

[He holds up a small knife in front of the screen, turning it a bit to catch the light. It's a very plain knife, barely longer than a steak knife, but much thicker and clearly meant for battle as opposed to throwing.]

I got this from the-- what did they call themselves? The Initiative? --well anyway, they let me pick a weapon and I chose this. But my question is this: Do we have to go to these required training sessions? I already know how to use a knife. I've been training with them for years. I don't think I'll need any training sessions - they can't teach me anything new.

[He shrugs before reaching over to turn off the device. He pauses though and grins again.]

Thanks in advance for your help! ...Assuming this thing is working, that is...

Third PERSON:
It's another rainy day, but Moby didn't mind. In fact, he was humming to himself as he walked, briefly stopping under an awning to dig something out of his pockets. It was a golden chain with a stone pendant - a beautiful necklace that Moby really had no business having. He grinned at it and twisted it a bit so it would catch the light. It really was a fine piece of work, and something he had swiped from one of the local dealers. Maybe he should have felt guilty about stealing from someone who (probably) didn't have as much as he did in this new world, but Moby was feeling stressed and the one surefire way to take the edge off was to swipe something. Even now he was feeling the urge die down and it felt good. He pocketed the pendant and continued humming as he stepped out from under the awning, back into the street. The rain soaked his brown, shoulder-length hair, but Moby didn't mind, even when his bangs got in his eyes.

"I guess I should get ready for training," He mused to himself aloud, stretching his arms up over his head. "I doubt they'll have anything new to teach me today, but I guess it's good to get some practice in before our next mission."

Moby didn't trust the Initiative, but he felt no reason to let that be known. For the time being, he was going to act like the perfect little soldier until he could get some more information about this world. What if they were fighting for the wrong cause? What if the Initiative was really the Bad Guys? Moby had no interest in helping anyone but himself, after all, but even he would feel bad about helping the wrong side if things got out of hand. He absently reached into his other pocket and pulled out his folded tablet, unfolding it and quickly ducking under another awning to keep rain from getting on it. "Might as well ask some of the others," He mused aloud. "Maybe they'll know more about the Initiative and this world. Maybe someone's got some idea if we're helping the right group of people."

» ADDITIONAL NOTES
Moby will have a permissions post set up in his journal! Sorry for such a long app!
